When your GLP-1 client's scale stalls: the plateau rule

September 28, 2026

At some point, most clients' scale stops moving for a while. This is the highest-cancellation moment in the entire coaching relationship, and almost none of it has anything to do with training.

The plateau rule exists so that when the stall arrives, both of you already know what it means and what happens next.

Step one: check the scoreboard, not the scale

Before changing anything, look at the numbers the training owns: loads holding or climbing, reps at a fixed weight, sessions completed. Show the client those numbers. A stall with strength intact is not a training failure; the training is doing its job.

This is why the strength-first scoreboard had to be set in week one. You cannot introduce it as a consolation prize at the plateau.

Step two: audit the boring stuff before touching the program

Check the plan before touching the program. Is the client hitting their planned sessions, their daily protein target and their usual walking? Two weeks of honest check-ins shows whether the plan is being followed, without a single program change.

The order matters: adherence first, program changes last. Coaches who reach for the program first teach clients that the program was the problem, which is rarely true and always expensive.

Step three: hand the weight question to the right person

If the audit is clean and the stall continues, the weight question goes to their prescriber; it is not a training problem to solve. On your side, keep the training steady, never a dramatic overhaul.

What you never do is slash and thrash: doubling sessions, adding finishers, pushing hard calorie cuts. That combination burns clients out, and it converts a two-week plateau into a client who quits.

The pre-frame that saves the client

Say it in week one, word for word: at some point your scale may stop moving for a while. If it does, we will look at your strength numbers first, and we will follow the rule. Questions about your weight or medication go to your prescriber.

A plateau the client expected is weather. A plateau the client did not expect is a verdict on you. The only difference between those two outcomes is a thirty-second conversation in week one.
