Judge your GLP-1 client's program by strength, not the scale

September 14, 2026

Every GLP-1 client arrives with one number in their head: the scale. It will drop fast, and it will feel like the program is working even if the program is doing nothing at all.

Your job is to move their scoreboard. The scale measures the medication. Strength measures the training.

Why the scale is a trap for you specifically

If the client judges by the scale, the program gets credit when the drug works and blame when it plateaus. Either way your actual contribution, keeping their muscle while the weight comes off, is invisible.

Worse, a fast-dropping scale tempts clients to slash food further and train harder, which is exactly the combination that burns muscle. The scale rewards the behavior that ruins the outcome.

The numbers that actually belong to you

Track what the training owns: loads on the big patterns week over week, reps at a fixed load, and the boring biometric, waist measurement. A client whose squat holds or climbs while the scale drops is losing fat. A client whose strength craters is losing the wrong kind of weight, and no scale number makes that a win.

Say this to clients in plain terms: the goal is not a smaller you. The goal is a smaller you that is just as strong. Strength holding steady during rapid loss is not maintenance; it is the intervention working.

Setting the expectation before the first plateau

Every GLP-1 client hits a scale stall, usually somewhere around month two or three. If the scale is their scoreboard, that stall is a crisis and your program takes the blame. If strength is the scoreboard, the stall is unremarkable: the bar kept moving.

Set this up in week one, not at the plateau. Review their numbers with them on a fixed rhythm, strength first, scale second or never. You are training them what to watch, and clients watch what their coach watches.

The retention angle nobody prices in

Clients who judge by strength stay after the goal weight, because strength is a game with no finish line. Clients who judged by the scale cancel at the goal weight and regain within a year, because nothing replaced the scoreboard they hit.

Which client your program produces is decided by which number you taught them to care about.
